Motherhood is a transformation. It is an experience like no other; one that swallows you up. The presentation entitled The Mother Monologues examines the outdated ideology and unrealistic stereotypes faced by modern day mothers.A special reading depicts three mothers in different points of their motherhood journey; the narrator weaves related content and connects the concepts with academic writing about motherhood.
We endure judgment, the gaze of others, as we maneuver through each developmental stage. Friends, family and strangers feel almost compelled to offer advice or pass judgment; as if there isn’t enough internal judgment occurring already.
We try to balance our motherhood with our other selves - career woman, wife, and community citizen.
Motherhood brings joy to life like no other; and challenges us the same. Based on our life experience we all have different ways of perceiving and thinking about motherhood.
Perhaps through sharing similarities and differences we can all appreciate one another’s experiences. And, we might be motivated to tell our stories in a new way.Join us as we share coffee and thoughts regarding our motherhood experiences in a one-hour special – Motherhood Monologues.
Our discussion will revolve around three segments of approximately 20 minutes each:
Judgment – “the gaze of others”
Balance – “juggling act”
Joys & Challenges
The attached questions will help you focus your thoughts on the coming program.
Times are approximate based on the enthusiasm for each topic, however we do want to ensure we make it through all three segments. Our format allows and encourages extensive interaction within the group.
Motherhood Monologues will be hosted by Stephanie Passingham, KSMQ’s Cities on the Move producer/host.Following a brief introduction, we will present a 1 – 2 minute video that will introduce our first subject – Judgment.Guests will then be invited to comment.A similar format will follow for Balance and Joys & Challenges. The program will also include comments and helpful hints from Jackie Pederson, a family-based counselor with the Freeborn County Department of Human Services.
Following taping of the show, we will provide you with a computer terminal to log a brief blog on your experience and any thoughts you have that would further the dialogue with the audience at home.
Attached is a copy of the complete Motherhood Monologues script as written by Lynn Kuechle.Lynn obtained her masters degree in 2007 from Minnesota State University - Mankato in Speech Communication. This project was completed originally as her thesis. She returned to school after being home with her two children who are now in 2nd and 5th grade.
